Tvibit History

oldtvibit.jpgThe City of Tromsø opened its youth house, Tvibit, on June 8th, 2000.The name was chosen at a youth council meeting on January 12th, 2000 and refers to a “free-zone” where no one can tag you in the game “tag.”  Tvibit came into being when youth in the city expressed their strong wishes for a new youth-house after Brygga youth-house was closed in 1994. A number of action-groups were formed and demonstrated by occupying City Hall (in a respectable manner). The youth council also took an active stance in lobbying for the creation of Tvibit. Tvibit was built upon the need local youth felt for a centrally-located meeting place.   The old youth-house, Brygga, was established at the end of the 1980s after street fights in downtown Tromsø and various youth occupations of other public places. Brygga was closed in 1994 because of internal disputes and substance-abuse issues. A lot of critique was directed towards the City of Tromsø for its lack of leadership. However, Brygga was also a house where youth, during certain periods, were very creative and were allowed to take responsibility for their ideas. Many of Tromsø’s creative forces were born at Brygga. Brygga has, in this way, been a major factor in creating a culture in Tromsø where young people can create things themselves and where they gain self-confidence, a go-ahead spirit, and the ability to see what can be done, how, when, and where. The youth-house, Tvibit, has a goal of maintaining the go-ahead spirit, energy, and creative vibes from Brygga while at the same time learns from past mistakes and continues to grow and develop.
